Rotavision International (MORE INFO) provides eye surgery, physician training and technical support worldwide for children and adults needing sight-saving eye surgery.
The mission of Rotavision International is to improve eye health in developing countries worldwide by teaching local physicians new techniques and providing them with the equipment to accomplish the sight-saving surgeries. The mission is carried out by physicians and Rotarians from San Francisco Rotary Club #2, working as a team with physicians and Rotarians from other Rotary Clubs in the United States and with clubs in the host cities.
Rotavision International, led by Dr. Otis Paul, a Pediatric Ophthalmologist in private practice, exemplifies the Rotary principal of teaching others how to care for themselves. Together with other ophthalmologists, they teach physicians within each country how to perform the sight-saving techniques. They continue to teach until the local physicians are ready to do the procedures themselves and teach others.
Funds from San Francisco Rotary Club #2 and other generous donors are used to purchase specialized surgical instruments, medical supplies, and essential equipment Dr. Paul brings to each country. These items are presented jointly with the host city Rotarians to the physicians as a gift from Rotary. All physicians and volunteers pay their own travel, lodging and other expenses.
Since 1993, Dr. Paul has provided lectures, education, training, surgery and equipment in Zimbabwe, Namibia, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Haiti, Nepal, Armenia, Russia and Lithuania. He has just completed his 39th trip and many more are scheduled for the future.
